For the last 30 years we have been building rich, data-driven, parameterised and robust models for corporates and medium sized businesses. We often provide these services to management consultancies but we also work directly with businesses themselves.
How We Do It
Firstly, if you would like us to sign any confidentiality agreement we are more than happy to do so. We handle your data and information extremely carefully and confidentially.
Once we have access to your data we then collate all the relevant data sources and make sure that these are structured in a way so that this data can either be appended to or refreshed, paying particular attention to how the data sources may change over time. From this we can start to identify all the business drivers and organise these business drivers into categories. These will be the assumptions driving the model.
Of course, if you have an existing model we can certainly also work with that. If new components are needed they might be added in the manner described here. However, if there are existing templates/conventions we will work with those - whatever makes the most sense.
We then start to prepare the formulae that extract information, depending on how the information is structured and what we need to extract, we may use pivot tables or we may use Excel formulae to drive the calculations. Named ranges are set up with our hierarchical naming structure which makes the formulae far easier to read and to know from where the inputs are coming. If appropriate we will use array formulae which acts as a safeguard against accidentally editing a formulae whilst also reducing the size of the model.
All changes made to the model are documented using in our version control process so that we know what changes were made when and by whom. Where possible we will validate the models accuracy using existing data sets so we can be confident in the results as well as doing sanity checks throughout the model. We typically share the development of the model with our client as it is being built to make sure nothing has been missed and that methodology we are following is sound. Development of these models is a very rapid process, usually completed in 6-12 weeks.
Our models are typically structured so that we can run sensitivities if required and to allow for future enhancements or developments. When working with other team members we set up interface contracts at the start of the project so that the models can be quickly integrated.
Lastly, we document how the model works, how it is run and how it can be updated so that anyone else can pick up the model and use it. Whenever we do any modelling work, the results of that modelling work belong to you. You have full access to all the worksheets and code, if any is required. We do not retain any intellectual property rights on what we build for you.
Many of our models continue to be used by the business for years to come which attests to their robust design and ongoing relevance to the business.
